Detailed description of Discovery Bay Golf Club

Discovery Bay Golf Club, formerly known as Chevy Chase Golf Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Port Townsend, Washington.

The front nine at Discovery Bay Golf Club (refered to as the farm nine) is the original 9 holes of Chevy Chase. Carved out of a farm pasture the "farm nine" opened on May 9, 1925. The back nine at Discovery Bay Golf Club (referred to as the forest nine) built out of the heavily forested hill above the front nine . The back nine opened on May 9, 1997, 72 years after the front nine. The design of the back nine was done by Michael Asmundson

The Discovery Bay Golf Club golf course has narrow tree lined fairways. The terrain is flat on the front nine and more hilly on the back. Water hazards come into play on holes #4 and #17. Sand bunkers also come into play on nearly every hole. The greens are small with a few on the front nine being very undulating. Otherwise, they are predominantly flat and a little slow.

Par for the course is 73. From the back tees the course plays to 6656 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5185 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 18, a par-5 that plays to 537 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 156 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 423 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Discovery Bay Golf Club is # 14, a 163 yard par-3.

Haven't rated this course for a few years. The front nine was designed in the 50s and design wise and condition, is nothing special. However, the back nine is a great design and makes the course worth playing. Holes 10, 11 and 12 are three of the best holes in a row I've played.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

The greens had been punched so putting was hard to judge. When healed, they might be very interesting greens to putt. The first four holes on the back nine are what would make me return to the course. Course condition could be better but then that would require a higher green fee. Very friendly and helpful staff. This is one of those courses that you'll like because it's a homey operation or you'll hate because they don't have money to keep it in the best condition. Will definitely play again when the greens are back to normal. Holes 10, 11, 12 and 13 were great.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again

It is clear that this course suffers from lack of attention. The amount of small white daisies (course was covered with them) made it nearly impossible to find your ball. Surprisingly the greens were pretty good. This would be an excellent candidate for an overall refurbishing complete with new club house and etc. Once they get the daisies and a few other things under control it will play much better. By the way the course is no longer called "Chevy Chase". It is now Discovery Bay Golf Club.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area
